Use the APN as a controlled test, not a guess
This guide focuses on the Telstra profile for mobile data setup, with a short APN test before changing sensitive fields.
The first job is not to rewrite every network field. Start with the Telstra APN value, keep device defaults where possible and stop editing once browser data works.
APN fields
Telstra APN starting point
| Field | Value | Use this note |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Telstra Internet | This is only a label inside your phone. |
| APN | telstra.internet | Main value to test first. |
| Username | blank unless supplied | Use only when the plan or source explicitly requires it. |
| Password | blank unless supplied | Use only when the plan or source explicitly requires it. |
| APN type | default, supl | Use only if the field exists and the phone accepts it. |
| Protocol | IPv4/IPv6 or device default | Keep the device default when unsure. |
Telstra APN values can differ between consumer, business and wholesale plans. Some legacy plans use `telstra.wap` instead. If your SIM documentation gives a different value, use that plan-specific value.
Setup
Setup steps
- Open the mobile network settings and find Access Point Names or Cellular Data Network.
- Create or edit the Telstra profile and enter the APN value exactly as shown.
- Save the profile, select it if your phone asks, then disable WiFi for the test.
- Toggle airplane mode for ten seconds and open a browser before testing apps or hotspot.

Full setup and troubleshooting notes
Before changing the APN
Use this page when a Telstra SIM is active but mobile data does not browse, apps stay offline, hotspot sharing fails, or the phone lost its profile after a network reset. The first rule is to make the smallest useful change. An APN profile controls how the phone reaches the packet data gateway, but many fields are filled by the SIM, the operating system, or the carrier profile already stored on the device. Editing every field at once can make a simple problem harder to diagnose.
For Australia, start with a readable profile name and the APN value shown below: `telstra.internet`. Telstra uses this APN for most consumer data plans on their 4G and 5G network. If your SIM pack, account screen, device configuration SMS, or carrier support channel gives a different value for your exact plan, use that plan-specific value. Some legacy or business plans may use `telstra.wap` instead. Prepaid, postpaid, reseller, roaming and data-only SIMs can behave differently even when the carrier name looks the same.
Android setup path
On Android, open Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Access Point Names. Samsung and other vendors may call the same area Connections, Mobile networks, Access Point Names. If an existing Telstra profile is already selected, compare it before adding a duplicate. If the existing profile is blank, broken or clearly from another carrier, add a new APN. Fill Name with `Telstra Internet`, APN with `telstra.internet`, and APN type with `default, supl` only if the phone shows that field.
If the phone has two SIM slots, confirm that the Telstra SIM is selected as the data SIM. Many failed APN edits are actually dual-SIM selection problems. After saving, test with WiFi disabled, because WiFi can make a mobile data problem look fixed when it is not. Open a lightweight web page first, then test messaging, maps, app store access and hotspot sharing if those features matter to you.
iPhone and iPad setup path
On iPhone, first check for a carrier settings update by opening Settings, General, About and waiting a few seconds. If an update prompt appears, install it before typing a manual APN. If the Cellular Data Network screen is available, enter `telstra.internet` in the APN field. On iOS, Telstra profiles are often delivered automatically via carrier settings, so the APN edit screen may be hidden. In that case, updating iOS or refreshing the SIM usually resolves data issues without manual APN editing.
MMS settings for Telstra
If picture messages do not send or download after setting up internet data, enter MMS values. On Android, create a new APN with APN type `mms`, set MMSC to `http://mms.telstra.com`, MMS proxy to `10.1.1.180`, and MMS port to `80`. On iPhone, the MMS fields are in the same Cellular Data Network screen. Not all Telstra plans require separate MMS values; test without editing MMS first.
Hotspot
Telstra hotspot and tethering configuration
Hotspot and tethering with Telstra
After confirming that regular mobile data works on the phone itself, test hotspot sharing with one client device before relying on it for work. On Android, open Settings, Network and Internet, Hotspot and Tethering, then enable Wi-Fi hotspot. If the connected device shows internet access without additional changes, the Telstra APN already supports tethering natively.
On iPhone, open Settings, Personal Hotspot. If the option does not appear, mobile data may not be fully active yet, or the plan may restrict tethering. Some Telstra prepaid bundles require a specific tethering add-on. If the Personal Hotspot screen shows a Wi-Fi password but no data passes through, try a USB tether first, then Bluetooth tether as a second test.
Roaming with a Telstra SIM
If you travel outside Australia with a Telstra SIM, data may require a different APN or manual network selection. Before traveling, check with Telstra whether your plan includes international roaming data and whether a separate roaming APN profile is needed. In many cases, the regular `telstra.internet` profile works across roaming partner networks, but some destinations may need a specific roaming agreement activated on your account first. When roaming, keep data roaming enabled in the mobile network settings and select the network manually if the phone does not register automatically.
Before calling support
Final checks if the APN does not work
- Confirm that the SIM is the selected data line on dual-SIM phones.
- Check that the data plan is active and not blocked by a spending cap.
- Remove duplicate APNs only after recording the original values.
- Test outside or near a window to separate APN problems from weak signal.
- Pause VPN, private DNS or device management for one controlled test.
Questions
Telstra APN questions
Should I change every Telstra APN field?
No. Change the APN value first and keep hidden network fields on their current defaults unless your carrier gives exact values for your plan.
Why does data still fail after saving the APN?
The line may not have active data service, the wrong SIM may be selected, signal may be weak, roaming may be blocked, or the device may be using VPN or private DNS settings.
Can I use the same APN for hotspot?
Often yes, but test regular mobile data first. On iPhone, hotspot may have a separate APN field only when the carrier allows manual editing.
What are the Telstra MMS settings?
For MMS, set MMSC to http://mms.telstra.com, MMS proxy to 10.1.1.180, MMS port to 80, and APN type to mms. Create a separate MMS APN on Android or fill the fields in iPhone Cellular Data Network.
