Use the APN as a controlled test, not a guess
This guide focuses on the MTN profile for Nigeria. It keeps the setup short so you can test whether the APN is the real cause before changing sensitive fields.
If your phone already has a carrier profile, compare it first. A duplicate APN can make Android select the wrong profile, while iPhone may hide the APN menu completely when carrier settings control it.
APN fields
MTN Nigeria APN starting point
| Field | Value | Use this note |
|---|---|---|
| Name | MTN Nigeria Internet | This is only a label inside your phone. |
| APN | web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net | Main value to test first. |
| Username | web | Required for MTN Nigeria data profile. |
| Password | web | Required for MTN Nigeria data profile. |
| APN type | default, supl | Use only if the field exists and the phone accepts it. |
| Protocol | IPv4/IPv6 or device default | Keep the device default when unsure. |
| MCC | 621 | Verify with your SIM card info. |
| MNC | 20 | Standard MTN Nigeria network code. |
Carrier plans can differ. If your SIM pack or account screen gives a different APN value, use the plan-specific value.
Setup
Setup steps

Full setup and troubleshooting notes
Before changing the APN
Use this page when an MTN Nigeria SIM is active but mobile data does not browse, apps stay offline, hotspot sharing fails, or the phone lost its profile after a network reset. The first rule is to make the smallest useful change. An APN profile controls how the phone reaches the packet data gateway, but many fields are filled by the SIM, the operating system, or the carrier profile already stored on the device. Editing every field at once can make a simple problem harder to diagnose.
For Nigeria, start with a readable profile name and the APN value shown below: `web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net`. If your SIM pack, account screen, device configuration SMS, or carrier support channel gives a different value for your exact plan, use that plan-specific value. Prepaid, postpaid, reseller, roaming and data-only SIMs can behave differently even when the carrier name looks the same.
MTN Nigeria uses APN web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net with username web and password web.
What to enter first
The practical setup for MTN Nigeria is intentionally short. Set the profile name to something you will recognize later, enter `web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net` in the APN field, username `web`, password `web`, save the profile and select it. Leave proxy, port, server, MMSC, MMS proxy and MMS port empty unless your device already contains a value or your carrier has provided one for your plan. If MCC and MNC are visible, do not rewrite them by hand unless the phone refuses to save the APN without them. MTN Nigeria typically uses MCC 621 and MNC 20.
On Android, the menu is usually Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Access Point Names. Samsung and other vendors may call the same area Connections, Mobile networks, Access Point Names. On iPhone, open Settings, Cellular or Mobile Data, Cellular Data Network. Some iPhones hide APN editing when the carrier profile controls it; in that case a carrier settings update or a SIM refresh may be needed instead of manual editing.
Android setup path
For Android, open the APN list and check whether an existing MTN Nigeria profile is already selected. If it exists, compare it before adding a duplicate. If the existing profile is blank, broken or clearly from another carrier, add a new APN. Fill Name with `MTN Nigeria Internet`, APN with `web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net`, username `web`, password `web`, and APN type with `default, supl` only if the phone shows that field. MCC should be 621 and MNC 20.
If the phone has two SIM slots, confirm that the MTN Nigeria SIM is selected as the data SIM. Many failed APN edits are actually dual-SIM selection problems. After saving, test with WiFi disabled, because WiFi can make a mobile data problem look fixed when it is not.
iPhone and iPad setup path
On iPhone, first check for a carrier settings update by opening Settings, General, About and waiting a few seconds. If an update prompt appears, install it before typing a manual APN. If the Cellular Data Network screen is available, enter `web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net` in Cellular Data APN, username `web`, password `web`. For Personal Hotspot, copy the same APN only if hotspot does not work after regular data is fixed.
If iPhone hides the APN menu, that usually means the carrier bundle controls the values. In that situation, reseat the SIM, restart the phone, reset network settings, and ask the carrier to refresh data provisioning if the line still attaches to voice but not data.
How to test the result
After saving, toggle airplane mode for ten seconds, disable WiFi and open a browser. If the page loads, run a second test in an app that previously failed. If only some apps fail, the APN may be correct and the issue may be app cache, private DNS, VPN, content filtering, low storage or a regional service block. If nothing loads, check signal strength, data balance, data roaming status, preferred network mode and whether the phone is locked to a network band that is weak in your area.
MTN Nigeria MMS configuration
If picture messages (MMS) do not send or download after internet data works, set up MMS separately. On Android, create a new APN, set APN to `web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net`, username `web`, password `web`, set MMSC to `http://mms.mtnonline.com/`, MMS proxy and MMS port blank, and APN type to `mms`. On iPhone, the MMS fields are in the same Cellular Data Network screen.
Hotspot and tethering with MTN Nigeria
After confirming that regular mobile data works, test hotspot sharing with one client device. On Android, enable Wi-Fi hotspot in Settings, Network and Internet, Hotspot and Tethering. On iPhone, open Settings, Personal Hotspot. Some MTN Nigeria prepaid bundles require a specific tethering add-on.
Roaming with an MTN Nigeria SIM
If you travel outside Nigeria with an MTN Nigeria SIM, data may require roaming enabled on your account. When roaming, keep data roaming enabled in the mobile network settings.
Before calling support
Final checks if the APN does not work
- Confirm that the SIM is the selected data line on dual-SIM phones.
- Check that the data plan is active and not blocked by a spending cap.
- Remove duplicate APNs only after recording the original values.
- Test outside or near a window to separate APN problems from weak signal.
- Pause VPN, private DNS or device management for one controlled test.
Questions
MTN Nigeria APN questions
What is the MTN Nigeria APN for internet?
The standard APN is `web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net` with username `web` and password `web`. MCC is 621 and MNC is 20.
Should I change every MTN Nigeria APN field?
No. Change the APN value first and keep hidden network fields on their current defaults unless your carrier gives exact values for your plan.
Why does data still fail after saving the MTN Nigeria APN?
The line may not have active data service, the wrong SIM may be selected, signal may be weak, roaming may be blocked, or the device may be using VPN or private DNS settings.
What are the MTN Nigeria MMS settings?
MMSC is http://mms.mtnonline.com/ with APN type set to mms. Use the same APN web.gprs.mtnnigeria.net with username web and password web.
Can I use the same APN for hotspot?
Often yes, but test regular mobile data first. On iPhone, hotspot may have a separate APN field only when the carrier allows manual editing.
